Michael Murphy – Principal – B.Comm, MBS (Electronic Commerce), Postgraduate Diploma (Professional Educational Studies [School Planning])
Michael is involved with administration of the Erasmus + projects in the college and has established contacts with a number of European Partners in countries such as France, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Romania and Iceland.
Michael is currently a member of the Principal and Deputy Principal Association (PDA) and served on the national executive for a number of years. He is currently is the Treasurer for this organisation. Michael is also a member of the Further Education sub-committee of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals.
Michael recently completed Mentor training provided by the newly established Centre for School Leadership.
Outside of college Michael follows GAA at both club and county level and is involved with coaching underage teams in his home club. Michael is a avid traveller and has visited over 60 countries.
Eilish Power – Deputy Principal – B. Comm., H. Dip.in Ed., An Ceard Teastas Gaeilge, MOS Master Instructor
Eilish began her teaching career with Mayo VEC (now MSL ETB) in Moyne College, Ballina, in 1998. There she taught a variety of business and IT related subjects at both Post Primary and PLC level.
In 2000, Eilish transferred to Westport Vocational School (now Westport College of Further Education), where she coordinated the Business Studies Secretarial (now Office Administration) PLC course. In 2003, Eilish was appointed as Assistant Principal in the school, and took over responsibility for the coordination and development of PLC courses therein. In 2005, Eilish was appointed to her current position as Deputy Principal, with responsibility for PLC coordination, FETAC Quality Assurance, Accounts, IT and College promotion/publicity.
In addition to her Deputy Principal’s duties, Eilish teaches a variety of IT modules to the Office Administration class and Healthcare modules to the Healthcare Support (with EMT) class. Eilish also teaches some general modules to various other classes in the College.
Having a passion for pre-hospital emergency care, Eilish is also a qualified EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and is a volunteer and Instructor with Civil Defence, where she holds the rank of 1st Officer. She is qualified in a variety of disciplines in the organisation including First Aid, Search & Rescue (land and water), Communications, Welfare, Auxillary Fire Service and Flood Defence.
In her spare time, Eilish loves spending time with her family, swimming, cycling and exploring the great outdoors.
Mary Greally- Night School Co-Ordinator
A graduate of NUIG with a BA in Mathematics and Economics and H.Dip in Education. Mary has worked worked with Mayo VEC (now MSLETB) firstly as a second level teacher in Davitt College Castlebar before joining WCFE in 2005. She teaches Communications, Retail selling, Work Experience and co-ordinates the Agriculture Course at level 5. Mary also deals with AHEAD for student funding at the college. Involved in the ERASMUS programme in the college. Co-Ordinator of the night school in the College.
Michelle McCarney – Assistant Principal
Michelle qualified from NUIG with a BA and H.Dip in Education. She worked in McHale College Achill teaching English before joining the staff at Westport College of Further Education in 2004.
Michelle teaches work experience, work practice, customer service, communications at all levels, and health and safety. Michelle also deals with student grants, attendance/returns to SUSI and is a core member of the pastoral care team here in the College.
Cormac Langan – Assistant Prinicipal – Horticulture/Agriculture
Cormac joined the team of WCFE in 2009. Cormac has a Degree in Agriculture from University College Dublin. He is an integral member of our staff and is responsible for the running of the Horticulture & Agriculture programs. Cormac has been successful at getting the WCFE Horticulture Garden full organic status with IOFGA.
Cormac is the student contact for AHEAD a service which provides information to students and graduates with disabilities, teachers, guidance counselors and parents on disability issues in education. Cormac also works closely with the Principal as Exam Secretary to ensure the smooth running of Examinations in the college.
Cormac is on the committee of the Clew Bay Garden Trail, set up in 2011 to showcase a unique selection of gardens along the shores of Clew Bay. Cormac has also been involved in the Westport & Castlebar Community Garden Schemes.
Catherine Roddy – Teacher – General Science
Catherine is a Science Graduate of NUIG. She holds a BSC and H. Dip in Education. Catherine taught in McHale College, Achill and St. Brendan’s College, Belmullet where she worked as a Science teacher. She joined the Westport staff in 2003 when it was a second level school.
Catherine is the Course Coordinator of our Animal Care Programme and teaches Animal Anatomy and Physiology, Mathematics, Animal Behaviour, Animal Welfare, etc. Catherine organises many trips for the students on this course to places such as Ballycroy National Park, Dublin Zoo, Bertra Beach for the ecology of the locality and Horkan’s Pet World for observation of exotic animals, etc. Catherine is also an active member of our Pastoral Care team.
Her hobbies include botany, with a special interest in the local flora as well as succulent plants from Mediterranean areas. She also has an avid interest in art as well as travel.
Her community involvement includes committee work with St. Mary’s Church, Westport as well as serving on the Parents’ Association at St. Columcille’s School, The Quay, Westport.
Claire Griffin – Teacher – Art
Claire started her career in art by completing the craft course at Grennan Mill in Kilkenny . Then went on to get a degree in painting and textiles from Cork College of Art in 1991. Claire now works from her own studio in Liscarney Westport as a painter and illustrator. She also leads creative workshops for various art centres throughout the county. Claire has been teaching in Westport College for over 10 years and is now teaching the painting and drawing module in our level 6 course.
Paul Taylor – Teacher – Art
Paul has been a ceramic artist since leaving art college in 1973 and brings to this course forty years of experience of working in the art world. His philosophy on education is that everybody has an individual learning style based on their personalities. Successful results come from understanding what that style is and thus turning their enthusiasms into interesting ceramics – be it simple pottery or something wildly creative. He also brings his expertise to bear in the constructive thinking module where the emphasis will be on creativity – how to get it and organise it into something worthwhile.
Anthony McNamee – Teacher – Art
Anthony Is an artist and musician and has taught Sculpture and Combined Materials at Westport College of Further Education since 2000. He is also an experienced art and music workshop facilitator. Anthony works mostly in copper and stone. He also creates giant puppets for street festivals and parades. He has exhibited in solo and group shows both in Ireland and New York.
Sinead Wall – Teacher – Art
Sinéad studied History of Art and Archaeology at undergraduate level and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Irish Art and Architecture at University College Dublin. She has over twenty years of teaching experience at various institutions including the National Gallery of Ireland, Newman House and UCD, History of Art Department. Sinead has practised as a professional painter and more recently as a fine art printmaker. She established her own print studio in 2008 and is a member of both West Ink and Wright Artists’ groups. Her work is represented in private and public collections and she regularly exhibits in various group shows including the RHA Annual Show.
Sinéad joined the staff of WCFE in 2007 and is presently teaching Printmaking, History of Photography, Constructive Thinking, Scriptwriting and Work Experience modules.
In her spare time Sinéad loves nothing more than spending time with her family, going on long walks, cycles, exploring the great outdoors or curled up with a good book!
Brid McCabe – Teacher – Art
Brid qualified from NCAD Dublin with a BA in textile design, followed by a H.Dip in Art and Design education. Brid then went to Switzerland where she taught Art and textiles in Steiner School and worked as a freelance designer. On her return to Ireland she took up a position as Art teacher in Tourmakeady Colaiste Mhuire and CFE. At PLC level Brid teaches drawing and design and Art history. Outside her working day Brid participates in textile design and exhibits in craft groups. At present Brid is completing her French Degree at NUIG.
Gordon McCann – Teacher – Motor Technology
Gordon is the Course Co-ordinator for Motor Technology at WCFE. He joined the teaching staff in 2009 and was responsible for setting up the Motor Technology course and equipping the Garage.
Gordon is a fully qualified Mechanic with over 28 years experience in the Motor Trade. He served his apprenticeship with an Independent garage in Dublin working with a wide range of cars and light commercial vehicles.
On qualifying as a mechanic he completed The Advanced Motor Car Technological Certificate at Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Bolton Street.
Much of Gordon’s career was then spent working for Ford Main Dealerships in both Dublin and Mayo. In 2004 he qualified as a Ford Master Technician.
Since entering teaching he has also taught in the Automobile Engineering Department at GMIT Galway and Youthreach Centres in Ballina and Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo.
Subjects taught at Westport CFE include Motor Vehicle Theory, Auto Electricity and Motor Vehicle Practice as part of the Motor Technology course. He also teaches Agricultural Mechanics and Night Class Welding.
John Sloyan – Teacher – Motor Technology – Engineering B.Tech (Ed)
John Completed a Bachelor of Technology (Education) in Materials and Engineering Technology at the University of Limerick. John completed a variety of modules encompassing engineering workshop processes, design and manufacture, electronics and education. He has also completed a Design and Manufacture project as FYP, which would have included welding training.(Mig, MMA and oxy – acetylene)
Since graduating from University of Limerick John has taught at second level as well as PLC. Subjects include: Engineering, Metalwork, Design and Communication Graphics and Technical Drawing. Coming from an agricultural background he has worked on many equipment fabrication projects and also gained much experience in maintenance and repairs of farm Equipment.
John joined Westport College of Further Education in September 2014. He teaches on a variety of our courses such as Motor Technology, Agriculture, Office Administration. Subjects include : Engineering Workshop Processes, Electronics (Motor Technology), Word Processing, Text Production, Web Authoring (Office Administration) and Farm Equipment Fabrication (Agriculture Level 6).
Heather Lynott- Moore – Teacher – Hairdressing
Heather Lynott Moore teaches Senior Trade Hairdressing Certificate, level 6, Beauty Industry Ethics and Practice, FETAC level 5 and Professional Conduct and Business Awareness, ITEC. She has 32 years of experience in the Hairdressing Industry, 25 years a salon owner and 10 years teaching.
F urther studies included courses in Advance Hairdressing, World Federation of Hairdressing,Advanced Hairdressing City and Guilds, Avant Garde and Session and editorial courses Toni and Guy Academy, London, Salon Creative Sasoon Academy, London, Training and Education, Open Learning Centre, NUI. Barbering and Creative Hairdressing, Alan International London. Manuel Rodriguez Pivot Point, Mohh.
Tutor to our Hairdressing Student Champions at the All Ireland College Championships in Barbering, Cut and Colour and Fantasy categories.
Heather has judged at competitions most recently at the Golden Scissors Award.
Lynda Mc Nally – Teacher – Hairdressing
Lynda Mc Nally is course co-ordinator for Hairdressing Fetac Level 5 & Junior Trades. Lynda is hairdressing 15 years and won many awards. He most recent achievement was when she took her students to Cork and won in categories Fantasy hiar for her speciality Bridal hair & came 10th in Ireland with her Fantasy hair piece in March 2015. She also co-owns LS Hair salon, one of the leading salons in Mayo.
Eamonn O Boyle – Teacher – Photography
Eamonn became a member of the team in Westport College of further Education in 2010. He is a graduate of Sligo IT in Photography and Fine Art. Eamonn co-ordinates the Photography Course here in the college. He is three times winner of the prestigious Fuji Photographer of the Year award. He has worked in the Photography Industry for the past twenty years and has published the acclaimed book A Peopled Landscape. As the photography industry changes Eamonn is mindful of this and his is reflected in the delivery of the course to the students. Through his vast experience and contacts in the photography industry students have been given the opportunity of meeting many recognised photographers either as visitors to the college or at exhibitions.
Angela Horan – Teacher – Healthcare – Nursing
Angela Horan joined Westport College of Further Education in January 2016, delivering modules on the Healthcare Support course: Nursing Theory & Practice and Care Skills. She qualified as a Registered General Nurse form Roehampton College of Nursing Education in South West London in 1992. Post her General training, she went on to Specialise in Orthopaedic Nursing completing a post graduate qualification in Orthopaedic Nursing at Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital in Hampshire England. Angela went on to complete 12 years in the trauma/elective Orthopaedic setting in the UK and Ireland, both public and private settings.
Angela completed a Bachelor in Nursing Studies at Trinity College in Dublin in 2000. In 2002 she went in to education in the clinical setting and progressing on to lecturing at 3rd Level in GMIT-Castlebar, delivering on the undergraduate and add-on programmes. In 2008 she completed a Masters in Nursing Science through the Royal College of Nursing in London – awarded by the University of Manchester. Angela’s masters research was published in 2009 in the Journal of Orthopaedic Nursing examining the activities and attitudes of the Community MDT in relation to osteoporosis and prevention and management.
Sinead Hunt – Teacher – Beauty Therapy/Make Up Artistry
Sinead joined WCFE in 2013 when Beauty Therapy was first introduced to the college. She is a graduate of Coen – Cantrall College of Beauty Galway. She is qualified in ITEC, CIBTAC and SIDESCO. Sinead has a vast experience in salons and spas both at home and abroad and is also proficient in Make Up Artistry.
Sinead is the co-ordinator of Beauty Therapy here in the College.
Caithriona McCarthy – Teacher – Agriculture/Horticulture
Caithriona McCarthy joined Westport College of Further Education in 2013 where she teaches Horticulture and Agriculture.
Caithriona qualified with a BA from University College Dublin (UCD) and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Studies from The Michael Smurfit School of Business also at UCD. In 2014 Caithriona graduated with an MSc. in Organic Farming from the University of Glasgow. In 2015 she completed a Permaculture Design Course with Geoff Lawton’s Permaculture Institute.
Caithriona co-ordinates the Level 6 Horticulture course at WCFE and also teaches business subjects on the agriculture course.
Dr Niall Curran – Teacher – Animal Care
Following a period in academia during which Niall was a junior lecturer and gained a PhD, in 1999 he co-purchased a large animal veterinary practice with his brother and partner, Ronan. Together they built the practice up to a four vet mixed practice.
In late 2012, Niall established a waste management company (MWMeco Ltd) which offers a cremation and cadaver disposal service to Veterinary Practices in the West of Ireland. MWMeco Ltd has been trading since January 2013. Niall joined MSLETB in 2012 and lectures part-time on the Animal Care course her in the college.
In October 2014 they opened a new pet crematorium operating under the name Mayo Pet Crematorium located in Cloonkeen, Castlebar. Niall has a broad interest in companion animal medicine and surgery and a special interest in orthopaedic surgery and trauma management, exotic animal and avian medicine and surgery.
John Mc Manamon – Caretaker
John joined the staff here in 2012 as a caretaker. He is involved in the daily up keep of the College and is responsible for the maintenance of the grounds.
Nicola Reid – Secretary
Nicola joined the college in 2004. She is our receptionist/secretary and deals with all the administration work associated with the college. Her duties involve dealing with the public, setting up online applications through MIT, processing applications for all our PLC courses, reviewing and dealing with any other queries associated with her role within the College.
